NATO leaders issued a declaration stating support for Azerbaijan's
territorial integrity in conclusion of a three-day summit in the
Romanian capital Bucharest on Friday.
One
of the clauses of the document containing 50 provisions inked by the
heads of state and governments of the alliance's member states
expressed concern over the unresolved status of the conflicts in the
South Caucasus region and Moldova.
"Our peoples support the territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Moldova. In keeping with those principles, we back the efforts aimed at peaceful resolution of these regional conflicts," the declaration said. The summit was attended by the top officials from the 26 NATO member states, as well as 23 countries that have signed the alliance's Partnership for Peace agreement, including Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. President Aliyev told a meeting on the situation in Afghanistan that Azerbaijan's contribution to maintaining international peace and stability has been on the increase. He said the role of the South Caucasus republic that is benefiting from the alliance's partnership programs in supporting international security efforts would continue to rise in the future. The president said his country's support to the security and development of Afghanistan would not be confined to peacekeeping forces and span to military training, the establishment of civil infrastructure and assistance in the humanitarian and education fields. Azerbaijani peacekeepers have been serving as part of the Turkish battalion in Afghanistan since 2002. 44 servicemen are patrolling areas in the city of Kabul. |
